Marching home, marching on his way!
During the First World War, Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971), exiled in Switzerland, met the writer Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz (1878-1947). Stravinsky was thinking about the folk tales by Alexandre Afanassiev (1826-1871). An enthusiastic Ramuz quickly wrote a libretto but removed all references to Russian folklore. Thus was born this famous masterpiece with universal appeal, inspired by the legend of Faust selling his soul to the Devil.
