In June 1914, filmmaker Alfred Machin (1877-1929) assembled extraordinary resources to produce Maudite soit la guerre (War be damned!) for Pathé, a realist, militant film presenting a dramatic love story against the background of war between two fictional powers. A century later, Austrian composer Olga Neuwirth (1968), familiar with the film world and known for writing inventive and polished music, composed a live score for this amazingly modern pacifist plea.
