Yesterday’s glory is today’s dream
At the confluence of classical Japanese theatrical art and contemporary sonorities, Aoi, yesterday’s glory is today’s dream takes inspiration from a mediaeval play about madness, Aoi-no-Ue, a drama about a woman whose rank demands elegance and grace but lusting for vengeance. Basing herself on the noh versions of Shikibu (973-1014/1025), Zeami (1363-1443) and Yukio Mishima (1925-1970), the subtle Japanese composer Noriko Baba (1972) and choreographer Mié Coquempot (1971) closely follow the protagonists' gestures and noises of their costumes, designed by Yoshikazu Yamagata, to emphasise the madness of this character, interpreted by the exceptional singer Ryoko Aoki, ambassadress of Japanese culture.
