concert version
Walked, walked on and on.
During the First World War, Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971), exiled in Switzerland, met the writer Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz (1878-1947). Lamenting the dearth of musical life, the two men decided to react. Stravinsky thought of Russian folk tales, in particular those of the folklorist Alexander Afanassiev (1826-1871). Filled with enthusiasm, Ramuz hastened to draw a libretto from one but erased any reference to Russian folklore.
