Francesco Filidei was born in Pisa in 1973 and studied composition in Florence and Paris, where his teachers included Marco Stroppa, Frédéric Durieux, and Michel Levinas. On the side he trained as an organist and became familiar with the potential of electronics at IRCAM in Paris. By the mid-1990s he had already been appointed organist at Pisa Cathedral. In recent years he has frequently held master classes in organ playing in Spain and Italy and given premières of works inter alia by Wolfgang Rihm, Mauro Lanza, and Helmut Oehring. As composer-in-residence in Stuttgart and Madrid, he has had an opportunity to devote himself chiefly to composition. At the age of thirty-five he can already point to a large number of awards and new commissions for distinguished ensembles.
